Legal Requirement

Under UK law (retained from EU Regulation 1169/2011) all food businesses must provide allergen information for the 14 major allergens when they are used as ingredients. From October 2021, Natasha's Law requires full ingredient and allergen labelling on all pre-packaged for direct sale (PPDS) foods.

The 14 Allergens

Celery — including celeriac. Found in soups, salads, celery salt, some meat products.

Cereals containing gluten — wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, kamut. Found in bread, pasta, pastry, batter, beer, sauces.

Crustaceans — prawns, crabs, lobster, crayfish. Often found in seafood dishes, pastes and sauces.

Eggs — Found in cakes, mayonnaise, pasta, quiche, glazes, meringues.

Fish — Found in some Worcestershire sauce, pizzas, relishes, salad dressings, stock cubes.

Lupin — Found in lupin flour and seeds used in bread, pastries and pasta.

Milk — Including lactose. Found in butter, cheese, cream, milk powders, yoghurt.

Molluscs — Mussels, oysters, squid, scallops. Found in some fish sauces and relishes.

Mustard — Found in salad dressings, marinades, curries, soups, sauces.

Tree nuts — Almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamia. Found in breads, biscuits, desserts, oils.

Peanuts — Found in groundnut oil, peanut flour, satay sauces, biscuits, cakes.

Sesame — Found in hummus, tahini, sesame oil, breadsticks, bread.

Soya — Found in beancurd, tofu, edamame, miso paste, soy sauce.

Sulphur dioxide & sulphites — Found in wine, beer, dried fruits, vinegar, some meat products. Must be declared if over 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre.
