Why watermark your website photos?

Usually used to show copyright protection for the photographer, however, you can have whatever you like, such as date stamps, QR codes, images, overlays, etc.

Should I add watermarks to my photos?

It is not the best idea!

They can look ugly, are not professional, and spoil the appearance of photographs.

They can also be removed quite easily.

If you feel that watermarking your photos is an absolute must, then a good alternative is to use an overlay image on top. Better still, place the copyright notice below the image; see the example below.

So what should I do?

If you really do not want your photos to be downloaded or copied from screenshot software and used without your permission the only solution is to not publish them on the Internet, but that may not be an ideal solution.

You could always publish low quality or slightly cropped versions of your images that if taken will not print well.

If you want people to see high quality versions of your images you could always publish them on a dedicated landing page that is hidden from search engines, and issue the links when you know the person who wants to view them is genuine.
